Harmony and Contrast

It was interesting to know about the balck and white contrast, creating the color harmony.
The colors that are next o each other can work together and in harmony. Blue and green are in harmony.

The colors that are opposite in color wheel are contrast. For eg; orange and purple are in contrast.

Black and white can be used to show strong contrast. Not in color wheel, but they are neutral colors. Black is darkness and white is like light.

Until God created the heavens there was only the void, which was all black with nothing, like the black paper. Then God created light and heavens and earth. He gave light to the void like the white of the chalk .

Drawing with Grid

Using grids to draw needs a longer concentration. Firstly children all were instructed to make a grid with 6 one inch lengthwise and 5 blocks height wise. Then using the marked grid, children drew the picture of horse. It is said to be that you can draw any picture using grid.

Learning color tones

I had an opportunity to attend a drawing and painting lesson, in which first lesson was all about tones. Just thought of help children with color tones also.

Black color was used to make different tones and it was wonderful opportunity to me how other people are enjoyed in doing drawing and painting, amazed at old and young.Reached home and got the idea to do the tone with children. As a family, everyone started drawing their own favourite pictures and used different colors to make tones. This helped me to open my eyes and look at pictures in a bit more wider perspective.

Since it was the feast of St Pio, I drew a picture of him and we read a book of him from cts.

Stained Glass Painting

It was great to see the spirit moving as I wanted to do stained glass painting with my children; munu came up with a library book for boys with the same painting.

Stained glass is another very old art form. The first use of glass happened more than  3,000 years before the birth of Our Lord. Glass is made by heating sand and ash together.

In the middle ages the windows of many churches were made up of many pieces of brightly colored gla. The pieces were held together by lead strips, which looked black.

First made window arch out from a card stock. Stick that on a white construction paper.

Then draw horizontal and vertical lines like those in the picture.

Children drew the picture of a knight.

These lines should be covered with strips of contruction paper. The lines make the speces for the colored glass.

Now color in the spaces.Use the color wheel and choose the clashing colors to go to next to each other such as red and green. Use bright color.

Now cut narrow strips of black construction paper about 1/4 inch wide (we were short of black paper, so we used different color). The real lead strips are not straight , so it does not need to be straight.Glue the strips.

Neutral black makes all the other colors stand out.

Below Stained glass window is from St Patrick's cathedral in New York city. Majority of the windows were made in France near Chartres Cathedral which has the greatest collection of 13th century stained glass.

You can observe how the outside colors shine through the colors and the lead band separates colors. The light shines through the beautiful windows remind the the way God's love and grace shines through our souls when we follow His commandments.
