We had a beautiful celebration last night. Reached home and slept off tired badly. Woke up with sore throat sudden, rough scraping feeling. I got up sudden and came down for a throat gargle. I got so amazed while downstairs looking at a blog, today is Candlemas day. So it is a day of St Blaise, patron of throat ailments.
From previous year
Blaise apparently saved the life of a boy who was choking on a fish bone. The Saint said that anyone who lit a candle in his memory will be cured So it is a day of blessing of throat with candles and known as healer. In the past in one of our nearby Itish church had Blessing of Throat by ever favourite priest for the parishioners.
Let me come back to Candlemas or known as Purification of Mary/ Presentation, day falls 40 days after Christmas.
This was the day that, in keeping with Jewish law, Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the temple for the first time. When Holy Simeon saw the baby, he had a lot to say, but we’ll focus on the end part: “For my eyes have seen your salvation which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a LIGHT for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”
Things you can do as Family
Blessing of Candles by Priest/ head of family saying prayers - signifies Jesus as the light .
Attend Candle procession if there's one.
With litted candles, family gather around and say Simeon's canticle.
Along with kids, find blossoms coming up, or snowdrops popping up. Traditionally it is known after Candlemas, the day lights started getting more, spring is on its way.
Do lots of Candle crafts with children. They enjoy.
Candlemas food ideas:
It is also a tradition to make crepes..you can follow some French crepe recipe. I'm sure it will be lot of fun for kids. Crepes ideas.
I love this saying,
" If Candlemas Day be fair and bright,
Winter will have another flight;
If Candlemas Day be wind and rain,
Winter has gone and will not come again.”
Winter will have another flight;
If Candlemas Day be wind and rain,
Winter has gone and will not come again.”
People believed that weather on today can predict the duration of Winter.
