Experiment with candle

Children were trying to do candle experiment. First prepared some colored water and poured it into a plate. Then lighted a candle and placed inside the colored water. Covered the candle with a transparent glass cup. As soon as you cover the candle, youcould see the water started rising inside the glass and then the flame turned off itself.

This is because the heated flame makes air inside to expand and escape out to create a vacum inside. The flame gone off, created a cold atmosphere inside and this caused a less pressure inside. Then the high pressure of air outside is pushing inside which is of less pressure causing the water to rise inside. Colored water helped to visualise the rising of water more clearly.

It was of fun to kidoos and they tried to experiment a few times to see how the water rises.

Mixing the colours. Good to know the primary colours and sensory applications of mixing the primary colors to create secondary colors.

Exploring  various densities of the liquids.

Awareness about the recycling mechanism and the materials can be assorted based on the nature of the household things.

What are shadows? How are they formed?. It was good for Munnu to explore about the term'opaque' as he was learning this week about the nature of materials. He put his handsinside shadow box to make different shadows, created various animal shapes.

Museum got a fabulous cotton industry remnants, exhibiting the spread of cotton industry, how the spinning machine works, countries (especially India) from whom cotton was exported in the beginning of industrial revolution.

As part of the textile exhibition, there is  'My Den' for children to make all sorts of Den using cotton mats, fabrics, cushions etc. It was fun for the kidoos.

Thanks charlotte for the beautiful coloring pages on this special day

Sept. 12 - Most Holy Name of Mary - In accordance with Jewish custom our Lady’s parents named her eight days after her birth, and were inspired to call her Mary. The feast of the Holy Name of Mary therefore follows that of her Birthday, as the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus follows Christmas.

Feast of Blessed Mother Theresa

“Blessed teresa of Calcutta, longing to love Jesus as He had never been loved before, you
gave yourself entirely to Him, refusing Him nothing. in union with the immaculate Heart
of mary, you accepted His call to satiate His infinite thirst for love and souls and become
a carrier of His love to the poorest of the poor. With loving trust and total surrender you
fulfilled His will, witnessing to the joy of belonging totally to Him. You became so intimately
united to Jesus your crucified spouse that He deigned to share with you the agony of His
Heart as He hung upon the Cross.

Blessed teresa, you promised to continuously bring the light of love to those on earth; pray
for us that we also may long to satiate the burning thirst of Jesus by loving Him ardently,
sharing in His sufferings joyfully, and serving Him wholeheartedly in our brothers and sisters,
especially those most unloved and unwanted. amen.”

Children read about Blessed Mother Teresa and practised  a play about Mother Teresa which is adopted from avemaria press. It was  fun even Therese also joined with Annu and  Munnu.

New School Year Preparations

Our old schedule worked wonderfully most of it, but with changes in our curriculum this year, it was time to develop curriculum as annu is going to year 4, could use almost the same from annu's last year with some changes. Thank God, the routines that established  last year  helped children to follow their schedule and children have taken it upon themselves to continue in the process of their learning most of the time.

Household Daily Chores for this  year spring forth from ideas iniated from reading  Erica  and Jessica .

Calendar ideas taken from homeschool creations.

Many of the ideas about charting daily weather, temperature, date and time adopted from here

Feast Of St Gregory the great

St Gregory  (540-604) Pope and the doctor of the church. Made many changes in the liturgy. He sent many monks to Europe to preach the Good News including St Augustine. He introduced the gregorian chants, esp Ora pro nobis...( Pray for us to God). He called himself  "the servant of the servants of God" a title every pope has adopted since then. He is one of the great Latin Doctors of the Church.

                                    Children made some feast cake.
